Kerala's Role in Literacy and Education

Image
Kerala's Role in Literacy and Education ( By Suhana Ahmed  ) Image By:- Sukriti Singh India is one of the largest countries in the world; in terms of population, area, and democracy. Comprising of twenty-nine states, India is the country with the most diversity within. As it is still a developing country, there are hoards of problems to be tackled and one such is the illiteracy.   The literacy rate of India is around 74%. Now, although it isn't as bad as it was before and it shows that the majority of the population is literate, it isn't quite the ideal scenario. Primarily, the literacy rate has not much to do with education and knowledge. One can qualify as a literate person by just writing some basic words. Secondly, although since independence, the literacy rate has elevated, one thing to be noticed is that with the literacy rate, the population increased as well, and in larger quantity. Therefore, there are more illiterate people now than there were back then. ...

TECHNOLOGY ADVANCEMENT

Image
TECHNOLOGY ADVANCEMENT ( By Pragya Kumar ) Image By:- Shalaka Pande It was a June afternoon when the sun's scorching heat was sucking the hydration out of my body. The thin stream of sweats was flowing down my forehead. The sweet jasmine cologne of mine got mixed with the moisture of my skin and exhibited a distinct aroma. After scrambling in the sun for hours I eloped to the shade of my building. I stood on the ground floor calling for the elevator. After 2-3 wage attempts, the guard informed me that the elevators aren't working. Agitated, I climbed the flight of stairs to the fifth floor, cursing every step.  I unlocked the apartment to find that there was a power cut. I threw my bag on the couch and pulled out my phone and the screen beeped with a 3 percent battery. It was a day full of regret and bad luck. I felt like putting my head through a wall.  What is life without all these technologies? I wonder what would have happened if Benjamin Franklin didn't discover elect...

Deforesting the Nature ( By Pashmeen Kaur ) Image By:- Graphics (LDL) ‘We are not cutting the trees; we are cutting our life span’ Deforestation is an activity that has affected most of our lives. It is a process of permanent removal of trees and making a room for other human activities. The question is "Are those activities more important than human life?". Evolution of Eating Utensils

Evolution of Eating Utensils ( By Pragya Kumar ) Image By:- Graphics (LDL) Gripping the loose end of her mother’s sari a six-year-old was walking down the aisle of a jam-packed market. She could hardly parallelize herself with the hastiness of her mother. All she had was a blur vision of the shops lined along the aisle. They were dark and grey. Among the dusky nuances of the market, her eyes got attracted to a colorful shop which was just a few steps away. Unknowingly she leaned towards the direction of the shop and with a static jerk, she froze at the doorstep of the shop. Her eyes twinkled with a beam of happiness to see a set of shinning cutlery set perfectly arranged to play. Without a second thought, she requested her mother to buy her the set. The mother gave her a stern look stating that her place was overflowing with her toys and there was no requirement of anymore. Her request now changed into stubborn want and ultimately into a cloudless shower of tears. The mother realized t...

Digital Education a Disaster Towards Classroom Teaching?

Image
Digital Education a Disaster Towards Classroom Teaching? ( By Sravani Gokaraju ) Image By:- Graphics (LDL) The education system has always been evolving, especially in India. In the olden days, the disciples or students would go to their teacher's house called gurukulam. They would stay at the gurukulam with their teacher until their education is completed and only then, return to their houses. After many years, a new education system came into place. This is where the students and teachers would all go to a school. Different students of the same age would sit in a classroom where one teacher after another would come and teach their subject for an allotted time. Students go back home after studying for around 7-10 hours a day in school. This is the traditional classroom education. This kind of education is what, till date, still followed everywhere. Since the past few years, technology has been evolving and becoming more advanced than ever, and schools and colleges are finding ways...

Swach Bharat Abhiyan

Image
Swach Bharat Abhiyan ( By Rounakshi Dey ) “Civilization is the distance that man has placed between himself and his own excreta” as said by Brian W. Aldiss. Sanitization and hygiene are two basic necessities of human life for its proper functioning. The rural-urban distribution in India is 68.84% and 31.16% respectively, as per the " Registrar General of India and Census Commissioner C Chandramouli"  A place where people struggle to get four square meals a day, dreaming of proper sanitization and a cleaner environment is nothing but a mere luxury. Hence, this is a place our government needs to step in, to perform its duties. The first step towards any successful campaign is spreading awareness among its people. Unless people understand the WHY part of the campaign they can never work towards it. India being lacks a proper sense of hygiene. As we look around we find filth and dirt. People are used to all these around them. Seeing our country in such a pitiful state our Central...

Urbanization: The Pawn that failed Nature

Image
Urbanization: The Pawn that failed Nature ( By Suhana Ahmed ) The earth is a vast place comprising innumerable species of organisms and abiotic components. The beginning of the world, according to science, was completely different. The earth was born without life on it and without so much as the basic air components. It was a huge area of heat. Then, evolution happened and life-supporting abiotic components were formed, leading to the first life on earth- cyanobacteria, commonly known as blue-green algae . The first life was microscopic (single-celled), aquatic, and photosynthetic. Then as the procedure of evolution went forth, life started to sustain on land too, and multicellular organisms were born. Through evolution, human organisms came into the picture. The initial ancestors of ours were cavepeople, who hunted animals and ate wild fruits to fill their stomachs. Then, the fire was invented, leading to cooking meat and other food. Since early humans lived on animals and wild ...

Relative Poverty Is A Form Of Social Exclusion

Image
Relative Poverty Is A Form Of Social Exclusion ( By Mehak Datta ) “Poverty often deprives a man of all spirit and virtue, it is hard for an empty bag to stand upright” Poverty has been made the disease more than an important issue in India. We think if a person is poor than he must not be included in social gatherings where all the privileged are present. Relative poverty often differs from absolute poverty as in relative poverty the person can afford the necessities (food, shelter) which are required to meet the average standard of living in the society. But why don’t we accept them? Why we think them to be aliens or untouchables just because they cannot go out to eat or multiplex to watch movies. Is going to malls or eating at expensive places can decide whether or not people will be respected in social surroundings? Why money is being the criterion to discriminate against anyone? Why can't we give the same respect to a taxi driver which we give to the car owner whereas he is jus...

Workplace discrimination in our society

Image
Workplace discrimination in our society ( By Neha Soni ) Everywhere we glance, we see differences in wealth, power, and status. Some groups have high status and greater privilege than others. This inequality within the system is what we call social stratification. In this unequal social system, there’s often unfair treatment directed against certain individuals or social groups. This is called discrimination. Discrimination can be based on—age, gender, weight, ethnicity, religion, or even politics.  Types of discrimination in the workplace:- • Age - This kind of discrimination occurs when employers make decisions based on age stereotypes or preference over merit. For example, if a sales company actively hires the youngest applicants, this is an example of age discrimination. • Race - This kind of discrimination is done during the hiring of employees, company prefer their same race people or while allotting a work or during promotions, same-race people are preferred.  • Nation...

Is happiness a good measure for social progress?

Image
Is happiness a good measure for social progress? ( By Neha Soni ) If you wish to be happy, be. How can we achieve happiness? It is a never-ending question posed by many societies across the world. Many of us are still seeking for the solution. WHO warns that by 2030, depression goes to be the leading contributor to the worldwide disease burden. So, should countries lead off to make their people happy as a goal in itself? The solution is “yes”, with more countries expanding their measurement of success this will be the best track. The connection between happiness and socially progressive:- • Do What You Love: Have you ever heard the phrase, “Do what you love, love what you do?” By doing things that you like and getting paid for it is the best you can choose for your career. Cruelty and Brutality : The Root of Forced Migration

Image
Cruelty and Brutality: The Root of Forced Migration ( by Suhana Ahmed ) The world is a vast place with different cultures and traditions, but it all began from nomadic life. Back then, the masses' major priorities were to fill their stomachs and continue their species. Before fire and agriculture were invented, the people solely depended on the forest for food, and when the food seemed to lack, they tended to immigrate to other places. Slowly when development and progress took place and people's priorities changed, life started changing too. To this day, people migrate from their native places in search of education, work etcetera, but the cultural development led to clashes between multiple cultures and caused havoc- stealing people's houses and curbing their rights. Migration is not a problem until it is limited to choice. Most of the choice migrations happen in small groups or family but forced migration happens in masses. Why does forced migration happen? Instability in...

Family & Single Parenthood

Image
Family & Single Parenthood ( by Pragya Kumar ) A tall banyan tree stood in the backyard of my grandparent's place which was cut down recently. As a child with not much knowledge, I always thought that it was of no use and could be replaced with a small pond. But my grandfather always believes that one day I would be the one who could miss its presence when it's gone. Now that I see its majestic branches fall to my feet, it broke me. The tree has been a fictitious home to my childhood innocence, an escape to my emotional adolescence, and a companion to my steady adulthood. In the years of falling generations, it stood broad and tall providing the same warmth and shade to the new progeny.  Its absence today makes me realize that it was much more than just a tree. It was an epitome of nurturing, a souvenir of my classic upbringing, and most importantly transparency of parenting. With the revolution of time, the condensation of the family became a trend. The vogue limited its...
