Multilingualism in India:
“One language sets you in a corridor for life. Two languages open every door along the way” by Frank Smith. India is a country of diversity. We are proud to open our arms to all the people irrespective of their language, social status, religion, gender, etc. We have different cultures, languages, religions residing together in harmony. India is a land of colors. India has 122 major languages and 1599 other languages. 22 different languages called scheduled languages and given recognition, status and official encouragement. Every state of our Nation has its own native language. Within each state, we have different languages. There exists a language barrier between urban and rural people. The multilingualism of our Nation not only depicts our rich variety but also preserves our tradition. Each language has its own history and culture. India being a multi-lingual country has a rich and diverse cultural heritage.
Multi-Lingualism in Social Progress:
Society progresses only when all the people progress together. If rural people are left behind, we can never claim that our Nation has progressed. English has been the new norm nowadays with parents eagerly wanting their wards to be fluent in English. But, rural people are yet to catch up with this culture. If our country has just one official language and we have the urban people using just the official one, it will create a huge division between villages and cities. The rural people will be unable to communicate their woes and difficulties with the urban people. They will not progress. Also, someone from rural areas will not be able to settle in the city as he will be unable to communicate with others. Multilingualism allows everyone to be on their own. It ensures a sense of togetherness and unity. Whenever we move to other states we look for people speaking the same language as we do. Speaking our own language allows us to be comfortable in our own skin. Multilingualism is a boon for our nation. It keeps up with our tradition of being together. Also, it preserves each tradition. Each language has its own rich history. As multilingualism is preserved, these stories are handed over from one generation to the other. We have a number of native tribes in different places of our country. They are yet to see the light of modern India. They stay within their own community and survive using primitive methods. They have their own language. Thanks to the presence of multilingualism, some villagers can still communicate with them in their own language. Having a single official language will absolutely cut off these people of our Nation. They will not be able to recognize themselves as Indian citizens anymore. Also, when we learn a new language we do not learn just its grammar. Rather, the heritage and culture of that language get passed down to us. We preserve our heritage by preserving the languages. Promoting multilingualism protects languages from becoming obsolete. Hence, for a proper functioning society having good social progress we require multilingualism.
Multilingualism in Economic Progress:
Promoting multilingualism allows all the states in the Nation to progress economically. If people are able to communicate in more than one language, it allows the business to break local shackles and reach to other states. Each state of India is rich in some local products which are unique to the state. In order to ensure that people from all over the Nation have access to the product, it is essential to have the cross-state or cross-region business. Multilingualism promotes our economy and allows growth in the country’s GDP. The local people feel at ease when someone communicates with them in their own language. So, knowing more than one language allows us to increase our networking to more people. Having multilingual diversity in our Nation, we can reach people from different states. Businesses can be promoted across the regions. It increases employment throughout the Nation. Also, there is a dire need for multilingual platforms on the Internet. Most of the e-commerce websites have their products and the payment gateway displayed in English. It poses a difficulty for most people who are not well acquainted with English. India has a role to play here. We can have developers working on the projects to have a multi-lingual facility developed. This increases the business scope and also helps the citizens. Hence, multilingualism allows for economic progress as well.
India should keep up its tradition of being a multilingual Nation. Also, if someone is not well versed in his mother tongue, he can never be well versed in any foreign language. Mother tongue is supposed to get the same respect as our own mothers. We should promote multilingualism in our Nation. We should keep its tradition and rich history alive. We can show the world that India is a progressing Nation with all its people from diverse backgrounds together. We, the Indians are proud of our nation’s diversity…
