“EDUCATION IS THE MOST POWERFUL WEAPON TO CHANGE THE WORLD”

The Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan was started by the Indian government to provide primary education to the children. It aimed at giving free and compulsory education to the children between 6-12 yrs. The program was started by former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The Right to Education Act came into force on 1 April 2010 and educationists believed it was a great push for the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan. The funding was done by the government providing Rs.21,000 crore for the program and was funded by many trusts as well when it became popular. But the real question is, were all the efforts worth it? Have we been able to reach all the children and provide them the basic education?

The answer would be a no because even after so much funding the

Abhiyan is quite a fail as 40% of the children drop out. From 2009 to 2014, there was an 18% decrease in primary school’s enrolments, while a 23% decrease was recorded in upper primary schools in the same period. But what were the reasons behind the massive decrease in the dropout rates and decreasing of enrolment of children?

The first and very foremost reason is the lack of infrastructure. The misuse of funds provided by the government was the reason why there was a lack of infrastructure and proper facilities were not provided to the children.

No teachers employed! The government did not have enough faculty for teaching and one teacher against the requirement of two in primary schools ranging from 877 to 1252 during 2009-14. Similarly, upper primary schools ranging from 50 to 113 had one against the norm of three.

The program was not able to fulfil the achievements because of the drastic no of dropout ratio. The parents lack the importance of education which is why the children tend to drop schools and help their parents with the work. Parents should be educated about the importance of basic education only then the children would be able to attend and give attention to the field of education.

Even after so many efforts of the government the goals of education to all are not met because we lack in making them understand the importance and also the government could not meet up the requirements and sources of education because of the corruption level in our country. Even if the government wants to start a good initiative for the benefit of people, some corrupted elements would not let that happen. We still have to educate people about its importance and to curb out poverty there is a compulsive need to educate them with basic education.

An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.
