Depression in Students
Depression in Students
I occupy the last bench in the class of sixty students. I never liked sitting on the first bench, not because it made me look like a nerd but I was scared of the education gaze of the teacher. A new student was admitted to the college today. He was a timid looking guy with a hood over his head and a tandem gait. He came and sat beside me. I smiled at him. He dodged it away. We sat silently. I could hear his continuously tapping his feet. His fingers clicking the pen every second. What a fidgety guy? He was driving me crazy. I gave him a stare but he was busy scribbling something on the back of his book. He was hardly interested in the class. His baggy eyes proved him to be sleep driven. He smelled like weed. One thing I was sure about was that this guy was weird. If not weird then maybe depressed.
Depression of education was not a major issue until Aamir Khan revealed it's grey identity through his movie "3idiots". I still remember what kind of effect it had on me as a student. In the words of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow depression is, "Every man has his secret sorrows which the world knows not, and oftentimes we call a man cold when he is only sad". I totally agree with the above statement that human psychology tends to sideline such people by interpreting them as cold, obnoxious, and anti-social. But these people are the opposite of these preconceived notions. In the course of time, they have built a cocoon for themselves which they enjoy. Although the elope out it that elopement is primarily temporary.
It's a hypothetical belief that depression arises out of heartbreaks. But theoretical depression is molded out of judgment of society, the ridiculous accusation for being who you are, peer pressure, financial stress, failure, guilt, and rejection. No person is ever born depressed, he is made depressed. According to a report generated by WHO over 300 million people in the world are living in depression. The major drawback of being depressed is that such people can be your roommate, your siblings, your best friend, or even your enemy. But you will never be able to judge their mind, they hide it so well. It's basically a medical issue that hits directly on the ability of a student to work, communicate, or study with such pressure.
"Self" is what people believe in. Fear of criticism jolts people to circumscribe their parameters. A sense of trusting themselves as well as the other evaporates. They create their own delusional boundaries. Majorly sense stress of students today is often perceived as depression but it's the shallowness of the mind to think so. Depression is a serious matter in a student's life which is often overlooked by adults. They tend to compare it with other forms of stress and peer pressure. In today's world of expertise, depression is a common mental state.
It's nothing to be ashamed of or to be scared of. Many famous personalities confessed their state of depression openly on screen. In one of the interviews, Deepika Padukon talked about her struggle with depression and stated that she was lucky enough to have parents who helped her battle with it. It is essentially important to talk to someone about your mental state. My critics accused her of saying that in spite of having every luxury of life, how can she go through such illness? People can never comprehend the exact nuances of depression. Life may seem visually glamorous but nobody knows about its transparency.
Shaheen Bhatt, an uprising author of " I've never been (un)Happier" talks about depression stating, "That's generally the apprehension I've had. My only fear is that I don't want this as my identity, that 'she is the girl who talks about depression.' This is one part of my life, a part of my story, not the whole story". Every human has a battle of their own to fight explicitly of all pros and cons of life.
"People think that depression is sadness, crying, or dressing in black. But people are wrong. Depression is a constant feeling of being numb. You wake up in the morning just to go back to bed again"- Mitch Clark
