The highest education is that which does not merely give us information, but makes our life in harmony with all existence.” Rabindranath Tagore. Education doesn’t limit us to only textual and within curriculum knowledge, it allows us to have a holistic development. We not only gain a graduate degree at the end of our college education but also we come to know about this world, its culture, its way of working. We learn to be a part of society as we get educated. India is a land of diversity. People from different religions and communities are a part of our Nation. Everyone lives here in harmony and peace. For all citizens, irrespective of our communal beliefs we are all proud citizens of one Nation. Education teaches us National unity, communal harmony and the importance of co-existing.

Gurukul System of Education:

  • This system of education was common in the old ages when mighty kings and emperors ruled our country. We get many references of the Gurukul System, in our history books. In this form of education, when a boy is of a certain age, he has to leave his household, and stay with his guru, in the ashram. The guru imparted textual as well as practical knowledge to his disciples.  Every shishya (student) had to stay in the Gurukul for a few years until his education got complete. During these years they were allowed to return home, only once or twice in a year. They had to stay together, make their own food, and do all the household chores in a Gurukul. Life in a Gurukul was hard. Any student, no matter what his family background, was equal in the eyes of the Guru. A prince and the son of a worker stayed together in the Gurukul. They were educated together, did all household chores together. Gurukul System promoted that everyone was equal. It promoted harmony among people and taught national integration. Gurukul system allowed the overall development of an individual to develop fellow feelings and brotherhood, made one humble and kind. This was the right method of education.

National Integration:

National Integrity refers to the feelings of brotherhood and equality among all its citizens. India is a secular country. People from different communities and cultures live together. Different cultures have different norms and traditions, we all live together and celebrate with each other. We see a number of our non-Bengali friends, visiting the Durga Puja pandals. As we study in schools, we are introduced to our friends from different communities and cultures. We grow up together. We learn about each other’s community. Many Hindus, visit their Muslim friend’s houses for the celebration of Eid. Education teaches us that we are all equal. We are all citizens of one Nation. India is a living example that people from different cultures and communities can survive together.

Education to the rescue:

Every religion has its own religious books. The Hindus have the Bhagavad Gita, the Muslims have the Quran, the Christians have the Bible, etc. If someone studies all these books, we find that though they are of different religions, they all preach the same things, humanity, brotherhood, tolerance, brotherhood. No religion can ask us to be intolerant towards the other. Education can never teach us to be wrong. People who receive no education are the ones who use religion as a cover and spread communal hatred. Our Mother Nation cries silently every time different communities spread hatred for one another. Education teaches us about national integration and communal harmony. It teaches us that we are all equal. In schools, the rich and the poor study together. We are never differentiated by social status. Education is important for teaching the young people of the nation, the importance of National Integrity.

Do you remember the last time we watched India play an international cricket match? Did we discriminate among our players based on their religion? No, for us, what mattered was India’s win and nothing else. We all cheered together when India lifted the trophy. This is what fellow feeling and national integrity are all about. No matter, what is our religion, caste, status, we are all one, we have the same identity, and we are all Indians. Education imbibes the feeling of brotherhood, unity, love, harmony within us since our childhood. Education is a powerful tool using which we can change the mindset of people for the better. Education is the passport to freedom of our mind.
