“A quality education grants us the ability to fight the war on ignorance and poverty” said Charles Rangel. Quality Education is a necessity for national progress. The government is responsible for providing quality education to all using our national resources. Furthermore, as more people opt for higher education, the overall economic standard of the country increases. How do we define a person to be literate? He is someone who can just sign his name in any language. Should this truly be a definition of being literate? The answer is No. How many literate people can solve sums of class five standard? The percentage is bleak. Though we have a number of students in rural areas attending schools, are they at par with the urban children? No. There is a huge gap between education in rural and urban areas. Quality of education is the reason for this gap. Providing education is not enough unless it is a quality education. |
What is quality education?
Quality is a relative term. It can never have a quantitative definition. Defining the term quality education will be difficult. Just like freedom and justice, the quality of education is something to be felt and not defined. We have different parameters while judging quality education. Examination records, employment after graduation, number of students pursuing higher education are the various factors upon which quality of education is based.
Challenges our Country faces in providing Quality Education:
Education in our country has reduced to a mere business model. Private schools and colleges look upon students as mere money-making machines. Education is commercialized in our country. The fees of private institutes are very high. The institutes keep on increasing their fees year after year. They provide admissions to more students than their infrastructure. The authorities are nothing but mere businessmen. The quality of education is the last thing on their minds. Private engineering and management colleges have crept up at every nook and corner of our country. They provide admission to every student on the basis of money provided and not on a merit basis. After passing from these institutes there is no assurance of getting employment. Money minded institutes are all over starting from the school level. The Government should have officials checking the education quality of all institutions throughout the year.
There is a huge gap between urban and rural education. The quality of education received in rural areas is very poor. A six student sometimes fails to solve a class two math problem. In rural areas, students flock to school for midday meals. Awareness regarding quality education is absent there. There is a lack of quality teachers in rural areas as every qualified teacher wants to shift to the city. Digital infrastructure lacks in rural areas. The children have no idea how far the education system has progressed world-wide. The Government should tie-up with different NGOs in order to ensure that every student in rural areas receives quality education just like those in urban areas.
Poverty is the main roadblock in getting a quality education. Intelligence is independent of economic status. We have different competitive examinations being held in our country to get into prestigious institutes like IITs and IIMs. However, in order to crack these examinations, one needs proper coaching apart from just school or college education. We have different coaching centres in cities charging an exorbitant amount of fees in exchange for preparing students for these competitive exams. However, an economically weak student can never access this quality of education provided by coaching centres. The Government should introduce scholarships to these economically weak, but meritorious students. Also, the fees for studying in IITs or IIMs are huge. Even if a poor student manages admission, the cost of the books required for studying and the fees are impossible for him to manage. The Government should introduce free education schemes for these students so that the quality of education is never compromised due to the lack of money.
India still faces brain drain when it comes to higher education. After graduation, most of the students have a tendency to crack exams like GRE and GMAT and go to foreign countries to pursue higher education. Whenever we ask their decision of going away from their country, they simply answer that the quality of education is much better in foreign countries. Meritorious students from our country go for research in foreign countries and hence our research lags behind. Prestigious institutes in our country do not get timely grants from the Government. Most of the institutes lack essential types of equipment required for experimental purposes. The research scholars do not receive a timely stipend. Hence, they get demotivated to continue with their research work. The government should look forward to providing adequate funds to the institutions so that our research work does not lack behind globally. Once, the higher education facility improves in our Nation, we will have fewer students shifting to foreign countries in search of better education quality.
