A Fight Against Drug abuse and Illicit Trafficking -

One of the hardest things was learning that I was worth recovery,” said Demi Lovato. This quote is a message for all those persons who are suffering from drug addiction. Our society has a lot of burning issues, like poverty, unemployment, corruption, etc. But the issue which affects the youth, the most is drug addiction. Our youths are our future. Every country progresses for its youth. If the youths are suffering in a nation, the future is bleak. The addiction means a physical or psychological need for a particular substance in order to survive. Addiction in any form is never encouraged because once our substance of addiction is taken away from us, we feel like dying. Addiction never generates any positive emotion of habit in us.

Drug Abuse:

It word Drug refers to any medication. We are generally prescribed drugs by our doctors when we are ill. Drugs help us survive. So, how can drugs be harmful? Now, the drugs we take are officially prescribed to us by registered doctors. But, there exist certain drugs that are illegal and harmful to us. Drug Abuse refers to the consumption of these illegal drugs simply because they cause a pleasing sensation to our brains. Now, we see the categories of drugs that cause addiction and are harmful to us:

  • Depressants: These cause depression of the brain’s faculties, examples include consumption of un-prescribed sleeping pills and heroin. These drugs prevent our brains from functioning properly and we lose control over ourselves. We are drowsy most of the time and have no idea what is going on around us.

  • Stimulants: They cause stimulation in our brains to increase our boost for activities. We get more vigor and energy for doing a task. It improves our performance. Then, how is it a case of drug abuse? Doctors never prescribe stimulants as they adversely affect our body, though they give awesome short term results. Many sportsperson use stimulants in order to improve their performance on a particular day. The government strictly prohibits the use of stimulants.

  • Hallucinogens: These drugs allow us to hallucinate, see things that are not real, and provide us an out of the world feeling. They provide us happiness and peace but affect our physical system. Drugs like ecstasy, LSD, and mescaline fall under these categories.

Why do people start doing drugs?

There can be a number of reasons why people get drug-addicted and from it, all starts.

  • In the case of students at school or college, it begins with curiosity and peer-pressure. Consumption of drugs seems cool and the fear of missing out compels students to start drug abuse. Most of them are unaware about the addiction part associated with drugs and the ill effects on health.

  • People who are depressed, instead of consulting the psychologists feel that drugs can be an easy solution to getting rid of all their problems. They never think of the bad effects of drugs on their body. They are happy with the short term result and before realizing they are addicts.

No matter, what the reasons for starting are, a person who is a victim of drug abuse can find his health deteriorating greatly. He is unable to survive even for a single day without the intake of drugs. Without the intake of drugs, a person feels like he is going to die. We also have cases where the wrong amount of a drug intake has caused death. Drugs not only cause addiction but also death in severe cases. One needs immense mental courage and a lot of support from their family in order to overcome drug addiction. Awareness is required to prevent someone from being a victim of drug abuse.

Illicit Trafficking:

This refers to illegal trading, selling, or dealing in some specified goods. Drugs like heroin, LSD fall under the category of illegal substances. Any person found dealing with any illegal goods is a criminal in the eyes of the law. Illicit trafficking has been a criminal offense since long, globally, various countries have collaborated together to prevent illicit trafficking. We have strict criminal laws if an offender is caught dealing with illegal substances. Drugs are the most common illegal substance that is trafficked across borders as well as within a country. Heroin, LSD, Marijuana are commonly banned drugs. Yet we find people consuming them. This causes cases of illicit drug trafficking. Generally, we have a global chain of criminals working together in this export and import of illegal drugs. The police has been always on the radar to catch these criminals and prevent drug abuse in the country.

A day dedicated to drug abuse and illicit trafficking:

26th June is celebrated as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. This day was marked in our calendars by the United Nations as an expression of determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse. This day is celebrated globally by various NGOs and the government to make a protest against all these activities. We see various awareness sessions regarding drug consumption and its consequences, rallies, and slogan protesting against drug abuse and its illicit trafficking. Each year this day has a theme. Last year it was themed as ‘Health for Justice. Justice for Health’, to show that both Health and Justice are the two sides of the same coin.

Being a responsible citizen, it is our duty to save any victim suffering from drug abuse. Whenever we find any physical changes in our near ones or any signs of being in a drowsy state, it is a warning sign for us to be alert. We should provide our guidance and support to the victim, only with our love and support he will be able to come out of the addiction. Also, as a responsible citizen, we should also inform the authorities about those involved in illicit drug trafficking. We hope to win this battle against drug abuse and illicit trafficking one day.
