Desertification Has Created Problems In Sustainable Agriculture In India

Desertification is a process of land degradation in arid and sub-humid areas due to various factors including climatic change, overpopulation, overgrazing, farming practice. We all know that agriculture plays a major role in every country's GDP. Agriculture provides us food and many things which is essential for our peoples. Sadly, some people are misusing agriculture are for their purpose. We all see nowadays that natural disasters play a major role in land degradation. Desertification results in persistence degradation of dry land and fragile ecosystems due to manmade activities and variation in climate.

According to the survey, mostly 30 per of India is degraded or facing desertification. Of India’s total geographical area 324.34 million hectares, 96MHA IS UNDER DESERTIFICATION. In India, there are seven states which are facing desertification.


Some Facts:-

Climatic change impact on agriculture leads to a 2.5 percent loss in India’s GDP.

Drought getting intense, more frequent in the southern state.


Cause of Desertification:-

Overgrazing: Animal grazing is creating a huge problem for many areas that are starting to become a desert. If there are too many animals that are overgrazing in a certain place, it makes it difficult for the plant to grow back.


Deforestation:- People are moving from one place to another place due to which peoples are cutting down the tree to stay. The company is being formed on agricultural land.


Farming practice:- Some farmer does not know to use the land effectively.


Stripping the land of resources:- If an area of land has natural resources like natural gas, oil, and petrol, people will come in and mine it and take it out.


Overpopulation:- Increasing the population day by day creates a problem of degradation of land. The problem created by Desertification in sustainable agriculture:


Hunger:- If we continue to degrade the farm and keep making the land desert. One day we may have to face hunger. Because we get food from the environment.


Flooding:- Without plant life in an area, flooding is a lot more imminent. Not all desert is dry; those that are wet could experience a lot of flooding because there is nothing to stop the water from gathering and going all over the place.


Poor quality of water:- If a land turns in to a desert then the quality of water is also affected. We found a good quality of water in that area where there are many plants. This is because plant life plays a significant role in keeping the water clear and clean.


Overpopulation:- When the area starts to become the desert, animals and people start moving from one place to another place where they can thrive. This causes crowding and overpopulation.


Poverty:- The entire problem related to desertification can lead to poverty. People cannot live without water and food and they take a lot of time to try and get the things that they need.


Food Security:- Food security is being threatened by desertification and overpopulation. According to which the population is increasing day by day we need to grow more food. The agriculture business is being displaced from one country to another country. Desertification is decreasing the amount of sustainable land for agriculture uses but demand is continuously growing.


Conclusion:-

According to UNESCO, ONE-THIRD of the world’s land surface is threatened by desertification and across the world. We all today take an oath that we save our forest and stop cutting down the forest.
