Global Environment Problems Have No National Solutions

Global Environment Problems Have No National Solutions

( by Sravani Gokaraju )

Since many years, the entire world has been facing various environmental problems. Technology development, overpopulation to the extent where more forests are being cut down to accommodate people and their needs, and human’s greediness and selfishness are the main reasons why the environment is deteriorating every day. Temperatures rising, waste disposal, global warming, ozone layer depletion, pollution, deforestation, loss of biodiversity, natural resources depletion, over population and many more are all part of the environmental problems that the entire world is facing. These problems not only affect humans but also all the flora and fauna of the world. If the rate at which these problems are increasing now goes on, it is not too long before they get to a level that is beyond repair.

There has been a prediction that the global temperatures are going to rise somewhere between 2.5 to 10 Fahrenheit in the next 10 years, the effects of which are already visible. To combat this, while some countries are working on their resource management, other countries are not, so much. This is mainly because a lot of money is required to address even the most pressing environmental problems. Not all countries have that kind of resources to spend. Also, developing, or under-developed countries already have other major issues to solve that might need more attention than this. Countries like Peru, Singapore, Bulgaria, etc. which have been doing remarkable work to protect the environment all have a much higher GDP per capita and are much more developed when compared to other countries like Uganda, Sudan, Iraq which not only have low GDP per capita and are under developed, but also have many other bigger problems they need to attend to. It is also very difficult to implement solutions to control environmental problems when countries are overpopulated.

Various summits and conferences are conducted every year when all the countries participate to discuss these issues and bring about solutions. One such summit is the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference that was held in Paris. 197 countries are a part of the Paris Agreement where they set out a framework to make sure the global warming is limited to well below 2°C to avoid dangerous climate change. It also is going to help the countries in dealing with the impact of climate change, and in supporting them in their efforts. But Donald Trump decided to soon after, withdraw U.S. from the agreement. Also, later, a lot of criticism has come its way as the policies were not implemented as envisioned by the countries and that even if they did, it would still not keep the global temperature rise below 2°C.

A recent report by the United Nations showed that chemicals polluting drinking water, deadly emissions and other environmental damages are causing a quarter of premature deaths and diseases, and that overconsumption and food waste in the developed countries is leading to hunger and poverty in the developing countries. But the scientists also wrote that even though the situation is challenging, it is still rectifiable. So, if all the nations strive together to make Earth a better place, the impact of a lot of problems could drastically reduce over time. All the Nations, with the help that the Paris Agreement is offering, must do their bit to save the environment so that these problems are resolved, and our future generations have something to look forward to.
