Illiteracy is a Boon or a Curse?
( by Shubhangi Paliwal)

Literacy in India grew very slowly until independence in 1947. The current Indian literacy rate is 74.04%. Kerala has achieved a literacy rate of 93.91% and Bihar is the least literate state in India, with a literacy of 63.82 Literacy is essential for the development of well being and the country. Illiteracy is a curse in India. There are people in India who are unable to read and write is said illiterate.

The people who are not educated created a dependence on the other person one way or another. Some create problems, chaos, disobedience, and invite superstitions to the world.

Cause of illiteracy:-
• Gender Disparity
• Caste Discrimination
• Poverty
• Lack of education facility
• Parents with little/no schooling

Why we need to remove illiteracy:-
Among the world, the adults who are not educated are struggling to earn money for their family, providing the essential is the big deal for them.

Illiteracy affects all areas of life. Illiterate people more likely to face poverty, health hazards, frauds, corruption, helplessness and it’s a major cause of the nation's slow growth.

Women literacy in India:-

Why it is more important to educate a girl than the boy?

Every issue is linked in a chain linked to one another and illiteracy is a mother of all the problems and causes issues like poverty, unemployment, child labour, population control, female foeticide.

The percentage of male literacy is more compared to women's literacy level. Women are the second side of the coin, one side is male we need both sides to be equal to develop our country. Low level of literacy not only harms the female's life
but also the family and its member as we say the first teacher of the child is his mother.

Some important factors which affect the female literacy level in India
• Early marriage
• Poor school environment for girls
• The lower number of enrolments
• Dowry system
• Poverty
• Priority is given to the son's education.
• Mental /beliefs of the parents and surroundings

Measures to remove illiteracy:-

marginally above the poverty line & who are covered under Janashree Bima Yojana. Already 3,20,253 people are recorded as beneficiaries under this scheme (till 2006).
