No child should be considered a “ Lost Cause”

No child should be considered a “ Lost Cause”

( by Sumi Mohan )

Children are said to be the best version of god. They are true from the heart and dare to question each and everything. The perspective of a kid is enrooted from his family and the conditions he lives in. Every kid is different from each other. Some would be good in studies, other in sports, and some in arts.

Every child is a different kind of flower and altogether makes this world a beautiful garden. -Anonymous

But we have seen some kids who have the potential sometimes don't get the opportunity. And we see parents not being happy with their children’s achievement because they were expecting more from them. These were the main scenarios when the children consider themselves a lost cause.

The first scenario where the parents consider their kids a lost cause. Having expectations on your kid is good, and it makes them motivated too but pressurizing them and not celebrating their small achievements just because you wished something else will probably lead to mental trauma for the kid. The parents should cherish every tiny or small attainment by their child. This happens in a family where the children are allowed or can pursue education.

But some kids don't even get the chance to have a look at books, and that is going to be discussed in the second scenario.

The skyline of a city changes with time.

But there are places that always grow and never recede, despite the glimmering skylines.

The Slums

1. Poverty and malnutrition

One of the major reasons is malnutrition. Generally, these kids come from slum areas, and from that, we can assume that they are poor and struggling to stay alive. The child mortality rate in India was 30.924 in 2019. In December 2019 around 500 infant deaths were reported in Gujarat and Rajasthan.

2. Educational qualification of parents.

In our Indian society, it is said that a Doctor's kid will become a Doctor, and a Laborer's kid will be a laborer. So even if they want to study, they are pushed back by the family or by society. But some idols in this world break such stereotypes like the farmer's daughter who ranked 25th in the Union Public Service Commission exam.

3. Child Labor.

Children in slums prefer to work instead of studying because they feel it would be better to invest their time in earning money and helping the family. They ignore the importance of education in life. Many of them leave school and go for any job.

4. Child Marriage.

Another reason is gender biases which are not treating daughter and son equally. They try the girls to get married at an early age. Although, child marriage is unlawful but still is practiced in many parts of the country. Getting married at an early stage and then having a baby within one year.

5. Juvenile Crime

Physical abuse at home and the unpleasant neighborhood will lead the kids to be involved in various crimes. Children have become the main source for the smuggling of drugs and black money. They unknowingly become part of these crimes for money. Over forty thousand juveniles were caught in crime in the year 2017 and 72% of them were between the age group of 16-18.

No children should be considered as a lost cause as everyone has their capabilities which we just need to polish.

The government is preparing and launching various schemes for the uplifting of underprivileged society.

1. Beti bachao, Beti padhao.

A campaign in January 2015, has the vision to remove the act of female foeticide and aims that every girl has the right to live and to get educated.

2. Samagra Shiksha.

An overarching campaign to bridge the gender and social gap in schools. The goal of SDG 4.1, states that by 2030 they will ensure that every kid will get free education, leading to effective outcomes.

I was born in a slum, but the slum wasn't born in me.
